Executive team orientation

The CEO develops the system. Every executive helps constitute it.

Use this orientation to understand the shared language, dual executive role, and live-work practices that support an Executive Human System™.

Open roundtable mark
1. Why the team is undertaking this work

The hospital’s complexity now exceeds what isolated functions—and one CEO—can carry alone.

The aim is not ordinary team building. It is to develop the team’s collective capacity to hold mission, strategy, stakeholders, tensions, and consequences together.

2. Understand the two systems

Leadership and organizational life continually inform one another.

Two human systems connected by leadership circulation
3. Hold the dual role

Your function matters.

Bring the full integrity, expertise, and accountability of your function.

And

Your function is a window into the whole.

Use what your function sees to help the team develop enterprise judgment rather than to defend a separate territory.

4. Use real work as developmental heat

The team develops inside consequential enterprise challenges.

Live heat is a real issue with enough consequence and interdependence to reveal the team’s patterns and enough feedback potential to support learning.7

Two deliverables

  • Movement on the enterprise issue
  • Increased capacity to lead similar complexity
5. Practice three lenses

Attend to yourself, the relationship, and the system while acting.

First person

What am I assuming, protecting, or enacting?

Second person

What is happening between us, and what can this conversation now produce?

Third person

What pattern, stakeholder effect, or system condition are we creating?

6. Prepare for the next session

Bring four things.

  1. One enterprise issue your function cannot resolve alone.
  2. One recurring pattern surrounding that issue.
  3. One personal leadership edge the issue activates.
  4. This sentence: “What I see from my function is ____. What I need help seeing from the whole is ____.”
Orientation is the beginning

Development occurs when this language changes what the team can do under pressure.

Bring the orientation into the live issue, test a different move, and learn from what the system produces.
